Chapter 11

The sun starts dipping low in the sky as the heat starts to ease.

“See that wasn’t so bad, right?” Miles bumps my shoulder as we climb off the Ferris Wheel.

“Yeah, that was pretty tame,” I agree.

“Hey, we should go down by the beach.”

“Isn’t it going to be crazy crowded down there right now right before fireworks start?” I ask.

“Nah, I know a place no one ever hangs out.”

“Okay,” following Miles out of the carnival we head down toward the lake.

Sounds of bells, rides, and laughter fade into the background, overcome by the sound of cicadas as we get further away from the festivities. Climbing over a hill and trudging through some tall weeds before we come upon a slightly overgrown beach.

I look around in awe at the quiet patch of land.

“How’d you know about this place?”

“Jay and I found it last summer. We used to come down here to fool around.”

A small pang of jealousy hits me, followed by a spike of heat at the realization that Miles brought me here. Does that mean he wants to fool around?

“I like hanging out with you a lot more than I ever liked hanging out with Jay,” Miles goes on. “In fact, I think I like hanging out with you better than anyone.”

“Why?”

“You’re smart and your sweet.”

“Miles, I-”

“Come on,” cutting me off, he grabs my hand and drags me toward a dilapidated lifeguard stand on the beach.

“Miles,” I say again once we reach it.

Looking down at me, he backs me up until my back hits the rough wood. My breath puffs past my lips in harsh breaths as I gaze up at Miles, who’s looking at me in a way I’m not sure I understand.

His large hand cups my jaw as his thumb traces my bottom lip.

“Miles-” Whispering his name a third time, intending to ask what he’s doing, but I’m cut short when his lips press firmly against mine.

My mind goes blank and my fingers curl into the front of his shirt.

I’m kissing Miles freaking Winters!

His lips move against mine slowly, patiently, giving me time to catch up. One hand is still on my jaw and the other is on my lower back, pulling me flush against his large body.

“Is this okay?” he asks against my lips, and I twist my fingers tighter into the fabric of his shirt, afraid to let him get away.

“Yeah,” I pant against his mouth.

His tongue teases along the seam of my lips and I readily open to let him in,

moaning at my first real taste of Miles. He’s sweet and spicy and completely addicting. Sucking his tongue and shoving my own into his mouth, wanting more of him.

Miles’ hand moves from my face to my hair, tugging at the roots and fusing my mouth more firmly to his.

I never thought much about kissing before this moment. There were always a lot of other activities that seemed a bit more exciting. But now, I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on this for so long.

“Wes,” he gasps when I bite down on his bottom lip.
